The Shire is committed to reducing our organisational carbon emissions and water use.

Carbon emissions

The Shire has purchased the WALGA Reporting Platform software and anticipates entering energy use data into the software in 2011.  Compiling this information takes significant staff resources including much time dedicated to data entry.

Once the information is entered in the WALGA Reporting Platform Software it will then be used to identify the most effective actions to reduce our carbon emissions.

Although the data entry phase is not complete, as facilities are upgraded or as components fail energy efficient alternatives are being investigated and implemented.  For example, a trial of using LED strip lights to replace flourescent tubes is underway in two offices in the Council administration building, and Roche Park has LED lighting in the car park.  Vehicle carbon emissions and pollution ratings are now an important consideration in purchasing light vehicles (Council Policy CS2.8 Passenger Vehicle Replacement).

Water use

In 2009 Council completed Milestone One of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Water Campaign that quatifies water use in the Shire, enabling identification of intiatives to reduce water use.

In April 2011 Council adopted the Shire of Collie ICLEI Water Campaign Local Action Plan and the following goals, thus achieving Milestones two and three of the program.

  1. To reduce corporate water consumption by 20% on 2005-06 levels by 2015-16;
  2. To assist in reducing community scheme water consumption by 10% of 2005-06 levels by 2015-16;
  3. To achieve 50 points from the ICLEI Water Campaign TM corporate water quality action cards by 2015-16; and
  4. To achieve 25 points from the ICLEI Water Campaign TM community water quality action cards by 2015-16

A copy of the Shire of Collie ICLEI Water Campaign Local Action Plan, which outlines how the abovementioned target will be achieved and which “action cards” have been chosen, can be downloaded from the panel below.

More information about the ICLEI Water Campaign can be found by on the ICLEI Water Campaign Website.

Milestone four of the program is implementation of the Local Action Plan and Milestone five is review.
